The Motorsportclub Geesthacht was founded in 1951 and ran motocross races at the site between 1956 and 1964 before laying out the permanent asphalt circuit, which held its inaugural race weekend on 15 May 1980 with Formula Ford and touring car races. The 9–13 m wide track features fast straights, technically demanding turns and three configurable layouts using a short connecting loop.
