About Sachsenring
Sachsenring is a 3.671 km, 14-corner (13 left / 1 right) motor racing circuit at Hohenstein-Ernstthal in Saxony, Germany — the spiritual home of German motorcycle racing. The first race took place on 26 May 1927 on an 8.618 km layout running on public roads through Hohenstein-Ernstthal itself: the original "Badberg-Viereck" (Badberg Quadrangle) combined high-speed straights, fast curves, slow hairpins and a section through the town's alleyways, all with substantial elevation change. The circuit was officially named "Sachsenring" in 1937. After hosting the East German motorcycle Grand Prix from 1961 to 1972 (and the only Formula 2 race ever held behind the Iron Curtain), the original layout was closed in 1990 on safety grounds. The ADAC Sachsen opened a new driver training and short circuit south of the original road course in 1995–1996, and following extensive work — including a Hermann Tilke-designed new final section before the 2001 season — the modern permanent Sachsenring became the home of the German motorcycle Grand Prix in 1998. The track has a clockwise direction but, unusually, all but one corner are left-handers. Tilke's 2001 update added the spectacular right-hand-then-plunging-left descent quickly nicknamed "The Waterfall" (Wasserfall), which drops dramatically toward the new final sector. Marc Márquez owns one of the great winning streaks in MotoGP history at the Sachsenring with eleven consecutive premier-class victories from 2010 (Moto2) through 2019 in dry conditions. The combination of Saxon hillsides, passionate German crowds and uniquely left-handed flow makes the Sachsenring one of the favourite stops on the world calendar.
