Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is a 4.448 km, 12-corner (7 left / 5 right) motor racing circuit on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and demanding motorcycle racetracks in the world. Motor racing on Phillip Island dates to the 1920s-30s on a public-road circuit that hosted the Australian Grand Prix from 1928. The original permanent circuit at the current site was opened in December 1956 after years of engineering work, but extensive surface damage forced it to close in 1962. Melbourne car-dealer Len Lukey purchased and refurbished the venue, reopening it on 22 October 1967 — and the rolling crest along the back of the lap was named Lukey Heights in his honour at that meeting. After hosting the inaugural 1989 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, the event moved temporarily to Eastern Creek in Sydney from 1991 to 1996 before returning permanently to Phillip Island from 1997. The 900 m main straight ends at Doohan Corner (T1), followed by Southern Loop (T2), Stoner (T3), Honda Corner (T4) hairpin, the high-speed Siberia, Hayshed and Lukey Heights, then the spectacular Phillip Island left-right-left-right finish: MG (T10), Turn 11 and the off-camber Turn 12 (Siberia/Honda complex) into the front straight. The dramatic Bass Strait coastal setting, the constant wind, the fast sweeping nature of every corner and the rich history have made Phillip Island a permanent fixture on the MotoGP calendar and one of the most-anticipated trackday venues in the southern hemisphere.
