About Hockenheimring
Hockenheimring (formally Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg) is a 4.574 km, 17-turn motor racing circuit in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany — one of the most historically important and dramatically reshaped circuits in motorsport. Construction began on 23 March 1932 and the first motorcycle race took place only two months later on 25 May 1932, on the original "Hockenheimer-Dreieck" (triangle course) of around 12 km that ran through the Rheinaue forests connecting long straights with a hairpin in the town of Hockenheim. The circuit became infamous when Scottish Formula One world champion Jim Clark was killed in a Formula 2 race on 7 April 1968 — his crash led to the addition of two fast chicanes and the lining of the track with crash barriers in 1970. A simple stone memorial in the forest still marks the spot of his death; the official Jim Clark monument has been moved to the new circuit's perimeter. In 2002 the Baden-Württemberg state government funded a complete Hermann Tilke redesign for the German Grand Prix — the long forested straights were torn up and reforested, dramatically shortening the lap and turning what had been a high-speed-blast track into a more conventional Tilke-style design with a tight stadium section. The new Hockenheim retains the long Parabolika straight (named the Parabolika–Sachskurve sequence), the Spitzkehre hairpin (Turn 6, one of the heaviest braking zones in motorsport), the Mercedes-Benz Stadium section and the iconic Motodrom grandstand bowl at the end of the lap. Hockenheim has hosted the German Grand Prix in F1 numerous times (alternating with the Nürburgring), the FIM EWC 8 Hours of Hockenheim and the DTM season finale, and is a flagship trackday venue for the South German scene.
