About Circuit de Chambley

Circuit de Chambley is a 3.3 km, 17-corner anticlockwise motor racing circuit at Chambley-Bussières in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department of north-eastern France — built on the edge of the historic Chambley Air Base. The air base was established in 1952 as part of NATO and used by the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1967, with the 21st Fighter Bomber Wing (previously based at George AFB in California) establishing its headquarters at Chambley in December 1954. After the US withdrawal from France in 1967, the airfield was used for various civilian aviation purposes including its famous Lorraine Mondial Air Ballons hot-air balloon meeting. The new 3.3 km racing circuit (12 m wide) was built on the edge of the airfield in 2009 and received FFSA homologation in mid-2011. The anticlockwise direction is atypical for France, and the 17 corners combine with the 400 m main straight to create a technical layout that uses the original airfield concrete and runways as the foundation. Chambley hosts car and motorcycle racing events year-round, as well as the spectacular Lorraine Mondial Air Ballons festival every two years on the adjacent airfield.
