Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (commonly Portimão) is a 4.653 km, 15-corner (9 right / 6 left) motor racing circuit in the rolling hills of the western Algarve, just outside the town of Portimão, Portugal.… Read more
Designed by Ricardo Pina with inspiration drawn from the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps, the circuit was completed in October 2008 and homologated by the FIM on 11 October and the FIA two days later, opening to the public on 2 November 2008. The 100,000-seat venue is built into a hillside and is famous for its extraordinary undulation — 70+ m of elevation change across the lap — with a blind crest-and-drop into Turn 1 immediately off the main straight that riders rank among the most spectacular in world motorsport. Portimão joined the MotoGP calendar from 2020 (initially as a replacement round during the COVID-19 pandemic and from 2021 as a fixed Portuguese Grand Prix), with Miguel Oliveira's 2020 home win — his first MotoGP victory — entering Portuguese motorsport folklore. The circuit also hosts the FIM Superbike World Championship, the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix (held in 2020 and 2021) and the FIA World Endurance Championship 8 Hours of Portimão. The combination of dramatic topography, a balanced 15-corner layout and reliably warm Algarve weather has made Portimão one of the most popular winter testing and trackday venues in Europe.
