Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a 4.657 km motor racing circuit in Montmeló, around 20 km north of Barcelona, Spain. Construction began in early 1989 and the circuit opened on 10 September 1991 with a Spanish touring car race, followed days later by its first Formula One Spanish Grand Prix — best remembered for Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell's legendary wheel-to-wheel duel down the main straight.… Read more
The circuit has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix continuously since 1991 and the MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix since 1992, and exceptionally hosted the 2024 Solidarity Grand Prix (a MotoGP round) after floods devastated the Valencia region. The original F1 and MotoGP layouts diverged in 2004 when a new slower La Caixa turn (T10) was built — bikes continued on the older version and skipped the shorter Europcar and RACC chicane sections — until the fatal accident of Moto2 rider Luís Salom in Europcar corner on 3 June 2016 led to MotoGP also adopting the F1 layout from that day onward. For 2007 F1, the first of the two final sweepers was replaced with a slow chicane to reduce speeds through the final corner. The modern circuit features 16 corners, a 1,047 m main straight, and named landmarks including Elf (T1), Renault (T3), Repsol (T7), Seat (T8), Würth (T9), La Caixa (T10), Banc Sabadell (T11), Europcar/New Holland and Caixa Bank chicane. Barcelona-Catalunya is also the year-round home of Spanish F1 testing and is the most-used Tilke-free Spanish trackday venue.
