The circuit was the dream of ex-rally racer Nono García, who set out in 1998 to build the venue on his own farmland, and it was inaugurated in 2000. The combination of warm year-round temperatures, extremely low rainfall and a technical 4.2 km layout (with tight challenging corners alternating with fast sections) quickly made Almería a favourite winter testing venue for European motorcycle teams. Today the Circuito de Almería hosts the Andalusian Motorcycle Championship, the Spanish CEV national rounds and an enormously busy trackday programme. The adjoining Andalucia Circuit (a separate 5.020 km, 17-corner course with the longest straight in Spain at 1.060 km) was added in 2016 immediately to the west of the original, with extensions in 2018, and the two can be combined into the Circuit Iberia — a roughly 9 km variation that is the second-longest permanent racing circuit in Europe behind only the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The complex collectively offers one of the largest selections of layouts at any single motorsport venue in the world.
